Mr Juvenal Shiundu, the first and only Kenyan Naval Architect (also first African in Eastern and Southern Africa), was born in 1957 and is currently working with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the London Headquarters as the Head, Africa (Anglophone) Section. IMO is the UN Specialized Agency with global mandate for maritime safety, security and marine environment protection.
Mr Shiundu graduated with a Bachelor of Honours degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from the University of Newcastle_Upon_Tyne Upon Tyne, UK in 1983 and with a Masters degree in Maritime Safety Administration (Marine Engineering) from the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden in 1986.
Prior to joining IMO in August 1997, Mr Shiundu was a General Manager of African Marine and General Engineering Company Limited, Mombasa, the largest Shipyard on the East African Coast where he rose up through the ranks in the shipbuilding and ship repairing industry to reach the level of a General Manager. Between 1990 and 1996, he was also a registered consultant in the maritime sector to a number of UN bodies as well as the World Bank. He carried out a number of field mission projects in different African countries to assess, advise, inter alia, physical facilities (Ports, Ships, Navigation
Aids and Human Resources), management, training, port operations, Regulations and marine pollution problems.
Mr Shiundu has worked closely and maintained contacts with the Ministries of Transport, Port Management Associations in Africa as well as with Chief Executives of Port Authorities and is credited with the general improvement of the maritime sector in Africa towards meeting the International Standards and requirements such as the current issues on maritime security. He has over 20 years international experience with extensive training in all aspects of ports, shipping and transport sectors, managing and implementing development cooperation programmes and working with the UN system and the Donor Constituency in technical Co-operation programmes in Africa.
In 1998, in an effort to open the Seaports of Somalia to the international community, Mr Shiundu organized and coordinated a very successful UN inter-agency mission of 12 consultants to Somalia on “The Protection and Sustainable Development of Somalia Marine Environment, Seaports and Coastal Areas” The mission recommendations amongst others are still a subject of discussion by the UN Security Council.
Juvenal Shiundu has authored and contributed to numerous articles and publications, and spoken at several international conferences and seminars, on topics dealing with maritime, port operations and management as well as on policies and investments in the transport sector. He has also appeared as an Expert Witness to a number of Formal Enquiries involving maritime accidents including the Ferry MTONGWE in Kenya.
